In 1969 Rinus Groeneveld attended a concert by saxophonist Dexter Gordon at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. He was so impressed that evening he immediately went out the next day to buy himself a tenorsax. Rinus is a "selftaught blues bastard" and has played with a lot of bluesy guys, among them Little Willie Littlefield, Mose Allison and Eddie C. Campbell. He became widely known in 1985 when the readers of a national daily newspaper "De Volkskrant" chose him as the best Dutch saxophonist. Rinus has a full and rich tone, but he can be mellow as well, that's why he is nowadays one of the finest saxophonists in Holland, a "musician's musician par excellence". In the 70's He has played with other great Dutch saxophonist in the A.T.O. among
them Hans Dulfer and J.C. Tans.
In 1985 he released an album called the "Blues Bastards" with drummer Han Bennink
and again saxophonist Hans Dulfer. This album is nowadays a collecter's item and sadly
enough sold out.
Texan singer and blues gitarist Joe Hughes invited Rinus to play on his album "Joe
Hughes", which was released in 1986. Two years later he worked with gitarist and
pianoplayer Freddie Cavalli on his soloalbum "Gimme a Night".
At the end of the eighties Rinus started to work with Dutch Hammond-organist Herbert
Noord. The results from their co-operation can be heard on the CD "Hi-Fi Apartment".
Rinus Groeneveld released in 1990 a CD with his own compositions called "Dare To Be
Different". It can be found on a Dutch label, Timeless. He is accompanied by bassplayer
Wilbert de Joode and drummer Pierre van der Linden.
Herbert and Rinus continued their co-operation in Advanced Warning and until now
they can be heard on several CD's "Nothing to be afraid of" (1991), "live At The Amsterdam Bluesfestival" (1991), "Hot House" (1992), "Watch out for the Jazzpolice" (1994), "Live in Amersfoort"(1996), "Cut the crap" (1996), "Hot Mosquito Night" (1997) and their latest "Explosion Extra Ordinaire" (2000). In 2003 they finished their new album "ReGrooavble" that was released in 2004. At this moment Rinus and Herbert are busy with preparing their next album, worktitle "The Friendly Piranha".
Nowadays Rinus has his own studio and has already produced several CD's of Dutch and foreign musicians. Among his productions is Wild Orchid by the Rinus Greenfield Jazz Quartet. Click on Wild Orchid for more info and how to order his new CD. |
